Recently, some friends of ours gave us a book "What NOT to name your baby" We are having a lot of fun flipping through it and reading what names are not recommended and why.....
The sad part is this: many of the names on my short list for our future son are in this book.
Clearly, my judgment is not to be trusted when it comes to names.
And so, I turn to you, friends in bloggerland, for help (and amusement)....
How about we indulge in a friendly round or two of the name game?
1.What are your favorite boy names?
2. What are your least favorite boy names?
3. What name would you absolutely NEVER name a child because it reminds you of someone that you detest?
4. What name are you fond of because it reminds you of someone you love?

My favorite boys name right now is Liam.
A name I hate..hmm..Martin
Name of someone I love: Zachary, Tyler and Elijah
Good luck. Choosing a name takes a lot of thought.
I always give a family name as a middle name.
Oooh, names. My favorite child-related subject :)
#1 - favorites
Max (this is my name for a boy - if we ever have one)
Alec
Charles (Charlie)
James
#2 - least favorites
Whether boy or girl, I don't particularly care for surname-sounding names as first name. (sincerely hoping I'm not offending anyone here...everyone has their own style, right? :)
#3
I would never name my child George W. Bush.
#4
I like Adam and Erik. Nice names and they're my brothers. :)
This is such a fun subject.
Hmmm...names..and boy ones at that. Ok..
#1 Names I love Noah and Jonah (I guess I like water??) I seem to like G names..Garrett, Gavin, Greyson...
#2 Least favorite...well, honestly never would name a son Peyton (for obvious reasons being from TN)
#3 I don't detest them but I have dated at least 3 Johns (no, not that kind of John) so that name is OUT!
#4 Most of the men in my life have boring names..ha ha
Good luck choosing a name and don't go by some silly book. It is a very personal decision. When we named Annslee ( I seriously thought I made the name up..ha ha) it was easy. With Malia it was more difficult...my MIL announced "I never really liked made up names" REALLY?? Malia is something like 450 on the SS names list and Annslee isn't in the top 1,000 (even with the traditional Ansley spelling) Like I said though..who cares...he is YOUR son name him what you want...btw..isn't Simon still tops?
#1 My fav's are Owen (we plan on using this name), Carter, Liam & Carson.
#2 Least fav's are Chuck,Paul,Ernie,Jim, the list could go on & on...
#3 never name my kid b/c of a dislike of someone, hmmm that's a hard one. I don't really have one on the boys list, but girl list I could name a few!
#4 I like the name Gavin (it's my husbands name, & a cool name I might add! ) but, I would never name my own child that name, I'm not fond of the Senior & Junior thing.
Choosing names is fun!
I like traditional boys names...my favorite is John Charles. My MIL actually suggested we name our kid Florian--can you imagine? She said it was a popular name in Germany. I also like Irish boys names...Aidan, Liam, Declan etc.
Our girl name the last time around would have been Caroline Margaret. (But L. was a boy!) I feel like I need to see a picture and know what names she has been given before settling on something this time. I am not feeling very inspired!
Good luck!
My favorite boy names: Hmmm ... I don't know that I have favorites. I just like to avoid "top 10" names. I really like Weston, but I'm still stuck in "W" mode.
Least favorites: Wilbur, Cletus, Jethro, Cooter. I also don't like Peyton because too many people are naming their boys and their girls that, so I am forever using the wrong pronouns in reference to the wrong child.
I would never name a child Sam. Cooterish ex-boyfriend.
Names I am fond of because they remind me of someone I love: Edwin, Wesley, Scott, Wayne, Matthew.
Good luck!
1. My favorite boy names are Gabriel (of course), Sebastian, Jonas, and Samuel.
2. Least favorites - Dakota, Austin, and other "place" names used as first names. (It's a quirk with me.)
3. Like Rachel, I would never name a child George. :-)
4. The names Henry and Joseph remind me of my grandpas.
I like Jackson (Jack), Freemont or Montgomery (actually knew people by this name and they went by Monty), Alistair, Laird, Parry, Jett, & Cruz.
I guess with an Asian child you should think twice about Bruce, Jacky, Jett, or Charlie type names but then again I love martial arts. In fact my child takes martial arts and they call her Man Ting after the child in a Jett Lee movie. That's fine with her. She likes the ManTing too.(She is Asian but not Chinese)
I like names that mean something to me & my family. People in our past that sort of thing.
Another thing to think of is that your child is already a little different then those around him. You might want to pick a regular old solid name. I am sure Bob, Tom & Mike never need to explain their names. I think it is always nice to be named after your dad especialy if you are adopted.
If you get a toddler a lot of times they will want their original name. I changed my childs name but she still referrs to herself by the old name.
In naming my child, for the first name I used a family name. It was an odd name but a family name. For the second name I used the name of a mountain near where she was born.
All the countries are different and you may readopt or do a name change before anything if final. Anyway, you end up having a lot of time with them in name limbo before you need to committ. You might want to meet him first and see what he looks like.
Hated names- I would say Elmer, but I met an Elmer before and he was a funny brilliant man named after his dad and proud of it.
Chiming in here kind of late, hbut better late than never. The name I love and hopefully will name our child that if it's a boy, which it most likely will be, is Joshua, Josh for short. I haven't really thought about a girl's name for awhile, since we changed from China to Vietnam. Originally, I was thinking Vanessa or Natalie.
I would definitely not name a child John since I went out with several guys with that name. Also the name is just too over used; maybe not now anymore, but the name wore out its welcome.
We may use one of the middle names as William, but most other names of family members I am not crazy about and DH does not want to use his name again. One Kevin around the house is enough. It's not like you can personalize it. My father and brother have the same name, but one goes by Henry and the other Hank, so it was clear, which person was being called. Also, if we were lucky enough to get a girl, I think we'd use my DH's mother's name as a one of her middle names, Ruth. We want to incorporate part of the child's Vietnamese name as one of his or her middle names.
P.S. Heard you got tons of snow this weekend. I know my FIL said it was snowing 6 inches an hour for a while and I'm sure it was worse up by you.
Tag Kelly you are it!
There is a big difference between names I like and names I would actually name my son. One of my favorite boy names is Birch, and another is Bard, but I know 1)most men would never agree to either one; and 2)it'd be a strong boy who could carry off "Birch" all through school. Also, our last name is roughly equivalent to "Forest," and it would be a bad, bad thing to name a boy "Birch Forest!"
Hey Kelly, I'm "Kelly from Michigan" akaTruly Blessed and wnat to say congratulations in advance on the adoption of your son. I have three of them myself, but only my youngest son's name ever entered my "top ten" list of names (my hubby and I could never agree, so DS #1 was a compromise, DS#2 was named (against my wishes) by DH, and I chose DS#3 (his name is Toby). But, to answer your questions:
1) favorite names: the classics (Daniel, Mark, Eric, Joseph, Kenneth, James, etc.)
2) least favorite names: Trevor, Tristan, Jeremy, Tyler also not too fond of androgynous last name first names (Taylor, Morgan, Payton, Logan, etc.) or "soap opera" names
3) NEVER name: names from the graveyard (Elmer,
Hank, Homer, George (though I voted for the current president!) or cartoon characters: Elmo, Burt, Bart, Oscar, Felix etc.
4) none
